If you are not currently in a relationship but would like to be, whether or not you envisage having children, there are certain things you can do to increase the chance of that relationship lasting. My advice applies equally to men and women, in all types of romantic relationships.
If this is of interest to you, this is a time for a self-review. Consider the points below in the light of relationships you have had and answer honestly whether or not you have paid attention to them in the past. Your responses will tell you if you are capable of sustaining a romantic relationship. Good to know.
Have you:
1 Given affirmation to your partner on a regular basis? You can answer yes if you have said thank you, squeezed their hand, smiled at them, given them your special look of appreciation….
2 Performed acts of kindness? These can be in the form of flowers, chocolates or a gift, but in fact can be as simple as making a cup of tea or ensuring they have some time to themselves – money needn’t be a factor here – the thought behind the act is more important.
3 Listened to and supported your partner? Even if it is a worry you have heard before, it is still possible to show care and listen actively. Talking problems through generally is much appreciated by all parties and helps with maintaining the relationship, because it strengthens the bond between you.
4 Enjoyed spending time with your partner as a couple and showing love? It is all too easy to get preoccupied with one’s own agenda and neglect time together. This can be the first sign you are growing apart, so it is vital to put some effort in here. It will increase your mutual happiness and you will be better disposed to deal with any issues in your lives.
5 Shared the chores? Interestingly, women perceive men who do this spontaneously as better partners overall. Beware neglecting the emotional chores though, which come in many forms. Men and women are equally capable of remembering birthdays and anniversaries and if you do have children at some future stage, hearing them read or fixing up their cut knees. Relationships that last demonstrate the benefits of sharing the load.
There will be more to come on this subject, so watch this space.
