At last – the evenings are long and light and the sun is shining. It’s the best time of year to find romance.
This year we have the added bonus of a very long weekend to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and there will be street parties and events all over the country. If it is your natural inclination to join in with these festivities that is great, because people are generally more open to approaches when they are relaxed. If not, please do not stay in and watch it on television! Step out for a walk and see what is happening where you live. You do not have to join in, it is fine just to observe, but the general air of well being will make this a perfect opportunity to connect with other people and that, my friends, is how romance begins….
Tips for striking up a conversation with someone you do not know (yet) include:
- Phone in pocket, smile
- Act brave, even if you do not feel brave
- Try some different openers, to see what works best – pay someone a compliment, ask them a question, or make a comment about where you both are or what you are doing.
- Do not assume that the other person will not be interested – we are social animals and we thrive on human connection
- And repeat. The more often you do this, the easier it will become.
You will feel better after you have had a few of those random conversations – more confident and optimistic; the Platinum Jubilee weekend is the perfect time to practice. It does not matter if you do not succeed in making any firm connections, the fact is you have tried and now you know what to do when someone you really like appears.
In big cities it is all too easy to keep your head down and not engage with others, which is why it is so hard to meet someone special these days. During the Platinum Jubilee weekend we are going to be sharing relaxed and happy times, so go for it!
